Practical questions
A water emergency: do not become a second casualty
If someone is in difficulty in water, alert the lifeguard or trained rescue team and call 998 for emergency medical help. Give the exact location and access point. Entering unsafe water without the right training can put both people at risk; rescue planning starts with your own safety.

Use trained help and safe rescue options
Follow the lifeguard or emergency dispatcher and use available safe reaching or flotation assistance only when it does not put you at risk. Do not jump into deep water, a dangerous current or an unsafe confined area because bystanders are urging you. Keep others back from the same hazard.

Tell the dispatcher about responsiveness and breathing
Once the person is safely out, report whether they respond and breathe normally. Follow the dispatcher’s CPR and AED instructions if required; do not waste time attempting to drain water from the lungs. This short guide does not teach rescue breathing or replace an accredited practical course.

Seek medical advice after a drowning rescue
Seek medical advice after a drowning rescue even if the person appears to have recovered. Breathing problems, persistent coughing, reduced alertness or deterioration need emergency assessment. Do not assume standing up proves safety or send the person away alone to sleep. Give responders the incident timing and assistance provided, without delaying the emergency call to collect a perfect account.
