Practical questions
Burns and scalds: cool the injury, skip kitchen remedies
Move away from the heat source safely and begin appropriate first aid promptly. Large or deep burns, injuries involving the face or genitals, and electrical or chemical burns need urgent professional assessment. Call 998 for a suspected emergency; do not wait for an online photo review to judge a serious burn.

Cool a heat burn with running water
NHS guidance recommends cool running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible for a burn or scald. Keep the rest of the person warm, especially a child or vulnerable adult. Do not use ice or apply butter, oil or creams. Chemical and electrical injuries need their own emergency guidance, not a generic home remedy.

Do not pull off material stuck to the burn
Remove nearby jewellery or clothing only if it is not stuck to the injured area. Do not burst blisters or use adhesive dressings on the burn. Ask the emergency professional about safe covering and transport; a photograph cannot reliably establish depth, circulation or the full extent of the injury.

Explain the mechanism to responders
Say what caused the burn, when it happened, which body areas are involved and whether smoke or chemicals were present. Arrange clear access and do not drive if unwell or seriously injured. After professional treatment, follow the dressing and review instructions given for that injury rather than restarting internet remedies.
