Practical questions

After a faint: waking up is not always an all-clear

Fainting can have several causes. Someone who does not respond or is not breathing normally needs emergency help immediately on 998. Even after waking, chest pain, difficulty speaking or moving, serious injury or an episode during exercise can signal a need for emergency assessment. Do not label every collapse “just the heat”.

Make the scene safe and check the person

Ask if they can respond and follow the dispatcher’s breathing instructions if they do not. Do not force an unwell person to stand, walk or drink before they are safely alert. If a fall or other injury may have occurred, describe that to the dispatcher before trying to move the person unnecessarily.

Report circumstances, not an assumed cause

Say what happened just before the episode, whether there was exertion, chest discomfort, unusual heartbeat or warning symptoms, and how long recovery took. Mention medicines and known conditions if available. A hot day or skipped meal may be relevant, but neither rules out another cause.

Arrange review after the immediate risk

A faint should be discussed with a clinician even when the person recovers. Ask about further evaluation and safety-sensitive activities; do not copy another country’s driving rules or assume a blog can clear someone to drive. Keep a simple record and seek earlier help if symptoms recur or recovery is incomplete.
