Practical questions

Severe bleeding: call for help and apply direct pressure

Severe bleeding is an emergency. Call 998 in the UAE and follow the dispatcher while providing first aid within your training. Do not wait for a home-care booking, search for a medicine or assume the person is safe because they can still speak. This is not a guide to treating internal bleeding or performing a procedure.

Protect yourself and control accessible bleeding

Use gloves or another suitable barrier if available without delaying essential help. For a wound without an embedded object, firm direct pressure with a dressing or clean cloth is a key first-aid measure. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions and do not repeatedly lift the dressing just to see whether it has stopped.

Leave an embedded object in place

Do not pull out a large object or probe deeply into a wound. Tell the dispatcher what is present and follow instructions about pressure around it and safe positioning. Do not apply powders, glue or improvised chemicals. Specialist techniques and equipment need the appropriate training, not a short article.

Give responders the mechanism and changes

Explain where the wound is, how it happened, the time and any known blood-thinning treatment. Report dizziness, reduced alertness or breathing changes. Keep access clear and do not give food or drink while awaiting emergency advice. A later wound review or tetanus discussion does not replace control of the immediate emergency.
