Practical questions

Adult choking in Dubai: get emergency help, not a booking

An adult who cannot breathe, speak or cough effectively may have a severe airway obstruction. Call 998 for emergency help and follow the dispatcher. Do not wait for a clinic callback, send a booking form or spend time looking for a perfect first-aid video. This guide is not a substitute for practical first-aid training.

Describe whether the person can breathe or speak

If the person can still cough effectively, encourage coughing and watch closely. Tell the dispatcher immediately if they cannot breathe, speak or make an effective cough, or if their responsiveness changes. Do not assume that silence means the obstruction has cleared.

Follow real-time help for the person in front of you

The appropriate first-aid actions depend on the person and situation. Use hands-on training and the dispatcher’s guidance rather than improvising from a short article. Do not blindly put fingers in the mouth to search for an unseen object, offer food or drink, or try to make the person walk away for privacy.

Prepare access while another person calls

If others are present, one person can call while another follows emergency instructions and someone guides responders to the correct entrance. If the person becomes unresponsive, tell the dispatcher at once and follow CPR/AED guidance as directed. Even if the object clears, obtain medical advice about persistent symptoms or injuries from the event.
